Iranian judicial sentencing of political detainees

Overview

Iranian authorities have issued several prison sentences against individuals accused of political or security-related offenses. Lawyer Bahareh Aghaei received a 20-year sentence on charges including ‘propaganda against the regime’, participating in protests, and assisting families of those killed during demonstrations.

In Sabzevar, Mohsen Khalesi was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Sabzevar Revolutionary Court for ‘collaboration with hostile governments and intentional arson of locations to oppose the Islamic Republic’. His sentence includes a five-year suspension. Reports indicate that Khalesi, who suffers from bipolar disorder, has made multiple suicide attempts in custody, though judicial requests for his hospital transfer were reportedly denied.

Additionally, Kamil Mohammadi, the nephew of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, was detained by government forces in Mashhad following interrogations.
