Iranian parliamentary rhetoric on US economic policy

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, has issued several critiques regarding the intersection of United States policy and economic stability.

Initially, Ghalibaf criticized U.S. foreign policy and sanctions, describing the resulting impact on Iranian citizens as a ‘frozen economy.’ He argued that the freezing of assets and relations creates systemic pressures on wages, housing, and investments. During this period, reports attributed to the Iranian leadership suggested that Ghalibaf warned economists that the Iranian people could not endure hunger regardless of military strength.

Subsequently, Ghalibaf shifted his focus to U.S. domestic economic issues, specifically inflation. He argued that U.S. inflationary expectations are increasingly driven by supply-side shocks related to geopolitical risks at energy chokepoints, such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait. He contended that traditional Federal Reserve monetary tools, such as adjusting interest rates, are insufficient to manage inflation when it is driven by these geopolitical variables.
