Iranian sports development and infrastructure challenges

Developments in Iranian sports focus on talent management, infrastructure, and accessibility for women.

In national football, Marzieh Jafari, head coach of the Iran women’s national team, has initiated a strategic focus on youth development and long-term planning. Her goal is to evaluate new talent to build a sustainable foundation and a strong “B team” to support the primary squad. Concurrently, domestic league concerns have been raised regarding player fatigue and injuries caused by travel difficulties and insufficient rest.

On a broader scale, officials are addressing barriers to physical activity among working women. In Kermanshah, Narges Shabani noted that family responsibilities and rising living costs hinder exercise, while previous directives to allow women one hour of work time for sports have seen inconsistent implementation. Additionally, in Kurdistan province, officials are working to address significant infrastructure gaps, noting that the province’s per capita sports space is well below the national average. Funding has been allocated for hall reconstruction and the expansion of facilities into rural areas.
