Iran executions surge and international condemnation grows

The wave of executions in Iran intensified through August 2026, marked by a crackdown on alleged espionage and continued repression of protesters. Recent executions include Mohammad (Cherag) Afroukhteh, Ghaem (Arian) Hosseini, and Mazid Antineh. Other recent deaths include Hamed Jahani Kalesar and Ehsan Shahvand. On August 1, 20-year-old Arvin Kheirkhah was executed, followed by Shahram Sadeghi on August 16 and Majid Adineh on August 23. By the end of August, the Iran Human Rights Club reported at least 72 prisoners, including three women, were executed during the month. Additional executions were reported in Rasht and Tabriz involving drug and murder charges, while Yousef Bavi was executed in Ahvaz following a murder conviction. In early September, Abbas Mardani and Mansour Rahiminejad were executed in Qom for drug-related offenses. New reports from early September indicate a significant escalation in the scale of the crackdown. HRANA reported that 78 people were executed in August, including five women, with charges ranging from murder to security-related crimes. Notably, Ghaem Hosseini and Shahram Sadeghi were hanged in connection with January 2026 protests. Iran HRM documented an even higher figure of 92 executions, claiming 85 were carried out secretly without official announcement, involving women, juvenile offenders, and ethnic minorities. Judicial pressure on protesters has escalated significantly. In Isfahan, sixteen political defendants received death sentences and a combined 215 years of imprisonment. This includes 20-year-old Taraneh Rahimi, who was sentenced to death alongside nine men for incidents in an Isfahan square. In the ‘Alikhani Square’ case, the judiciary rejected a retrial request for Alireza Sepahi, who had previously suffered a stroke while awaiting execution. In Tehran, Bita Ali-Hemati faces a death sentence and five years of imprisonment following a retrial for charges of assembly and collusion against national security.
