Israel E1 settlement project controversy
Overview
The Israeli government issued a tender for over 1,200 new housing units as part of the E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank. This initiative aims to build a total of more than 3,400 units across approximately 12 square kilometers, a move intended to connect settlements in East Jerusalem to the Maale Adumim settlement bloc.
The project has drawn significant international and regional condemnation. The Palestinian Authority warned that the expansion would leave Palestinians in “disconnected enclaves surrounded by settlements,” potentially bisecting the West Bank and undermining a two-state solution. Germany also condemned the move, stating the expansion violates international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
Following the tender, the United Kingdom summoned the Israeli chargé d'affaires to protest the development. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described the project as “unacceptable and destructive,” warning that it jeopardizes the viability of a two-state solution. The UK government indicated it may announce a “comprehensive set of measures,” potentially including sanctions against those involved in settlement expansion, to respond to Israeli policies.
