In early August 2026, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continued a series of targeted operations in Gaza aimed at degrading Hamas’s leadership and capabilities. On 2 August, IDF and Shin Bet air and ground strikes eliminated several senior Hamas figures involved in the Oct 7 attacks and the holding of Israeli hostages, including Nukhba unit commanders Mohammed Fatir and Abdullah Adnan Taha Abu Al‑Tayef, and battalion leader Jalal Zebih. The operations also destroyed five weapons depots and were part of the “Doors of the Sky” campaign to weaken Hamas’s command structure. On 3 August, further airstrikes in the Deir al‑Balah area and the Sati camp killed two additional senior Hamas operatives linked to the Oct 7 assault, identified as Abdallah Antan Taha Abu al‑Tayef and Jalal Sobiech, a Daraj‑Tuffah battalion commander. These strikes targeted militants allegedly planning attacks despite a cease-fire. Concurrently, the personal toll of the conflict was highlighted by the suicide of Bar Asraf, an Oct 7 survivor, in the West Bank.
