Military activity in southern Lebanon continues to fluctuate despite a Washington-signed framework agreement. UNIFIL has reported intense kinetic operations, including a surge in projectiles and airspace violations. Tensions escalated following reports of Israeli flags appearing along a major coastal road connecting Naqoura and Tyre, which UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel confirmed constitute a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Israeli forces have conducted various attacks, including automatic weapon fire in Hadatha, airstrikes in the Huceyr Valley, and artillery fire in Beni Hayyan. Reports also indicate demolitions of buildings and roads in areas such as Zautar el Charkiyeh and Meis al Jabal. Recent operations have expanded to include extensive air and artillery strikes across the Sur, Marjayoun, Bint Jbeil, and Nabatieh regions. The humanitarian impact remains severe; the Lebanese Ministry of Health reports that since March 2, attacks have resulted in 4,350 deaths and 12,300 injuries, with over 1 million people displaced. Regarding the future of peacekeeping, UN Security Council Resolution 2790, passed on August 28, 2025, established that the current UNIFIL mandate extension until December 31, 2026, is final. Following this date, a one-year process of ‘organized and safe reduction and withdrawal’ will commence.
