Israel-Lebanon conflict civilian toll

UN officials first warned that Israel’s intensive bombardment of southern Lebanon could amount to war crimes, citing mass displacement, destruction of civilian infrastructure and the use of explosives in densely populated areas. The UN High Commissioner highlighted over 4,300 civilian deaths and thousands injured since the March 2 attacks, despite a conditional cease‑fire agreed in April.

A few days later the UN escalated its criticism, condemning large‑scale demolitions, including the use of roughly 700 tons of explosives near the UNESCO‑listed Beaufort Castle. The statement noted a sharp rise in civilian fatalities, including children, and reiterated calls from the Secretary‑General for an immediate halt to hostilities and respect for humanitarian law. Together the two reports trace a shift from an initial legal warning to a broader condemnation of the humanitarian and cultural damage caused by the ongoing Israeli operations in southern Lebanon.
