Israel-Turkey tensions over Syrian airstrike

Overview

An Israeli airstrike targeted the Abu al-Duhur military air base in Syria’s Idlib province, striking a runway and hangar. While Israel initially claimed the operation was based on intelligence that Turkish soldiers were attempting to deploy military installations at the site, U.S. officials disputed this.

U.S. Ambassador to Ankara and special envoy Tom Barrack stated that intelligence suggesting the presence of Turkish military assets at the location was incorrect. Barrack suggested the incident might have resulted from a “miscommunication” between the Israeli military, Mossad, and the Prime Minister’s Office, and noted that neither the United States nor Türkiye were notified in advance. He further characterized the strike as an “unnecessary escalation” that nearly led to direct military confrontation, noting that Ankara considered scrambling fighter jets.

In response, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz rejected Barrack’s criticisms, describing them as “full of inaccuracies.” Katz asserted that the Israel Defense Forces repeatedly recommended the strike to prevent Turkish military developments that could threaten Israeli security. He maintained that Israel possessed clear intelligence regarding Turkish intentions and claimed the government had provided high-level warnings to the Syrian government and informed U.S. authorities prior to the operation.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Presidency’s Communications Directorate rejected claims from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, describing them as attempts to justify illegal strikes against Syrian sovereignty. Turkey emphasized its commitment to a stable Syria and criticized regional expansionist policies.
