Israeli political reaction to Iranian leadership death
Overview
Following the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei during the early stages of a US-Israeli war against Iran, Israeli political and intelligence figures have criticized the operation as a strategic failure.
Yair Golan, leader of the Democratic Party, argued that the assassination failed to topple the Iranian government and instead strengthened ultra-hardline factions under the succession of Mojtaba Khamenei. Golan suggested the move worsened Israel’s strategic position.
Similarly, former Mossad chief Tamir Pardo described the assassination as a ‘huge mistake’ and a ‘serious strategic failure.’ Pardo noted that the operation, which was a purely Israeli initiative, failed to achieve the goal of government collapse and instead bolstered the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He warned that the act may have opened a ‘Pandora’s box of revenge’ by setting a precedent for targeting senior officials.
