Israeli security measures and legal disputes in West Bank
Overview
Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz has taken steps to restrict activities and military presence in the West Bank. Initially, Katz reportedly sought to use administrative orders to ban or deport Israeli and foreign activists, such as members of ‘Protect the Harvest’ and the ‘International Solidarity Movement’, who enter the region to protect Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest.
Following this, Katz rejected a Supreme Court order requiring the military to establish a timeline for the return of Palestinians displaced during 2025 counter-terrorism operations in the Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams refugee camps. Katz argued that the military presence in these areas is a “permanent operational security necessity” and maintained that the court should not interfere in security decisions, asserting that such presence has reduced terrorism in the West Bank by 80 percent.
