Israel expands Gaza barrier to 23 km

Overview

In July 2026 Israel accelerated construction of an earthen berm along the Gaza “Yellow Line”. By 19 July a 23‑km wall was already visible, and satellite images released on 21 July confirmed the barrier now stretches over 23 kilometres—covering more than half the Strip. The segment near Rafah grew from about 500 m on 1 July to roughly 2.4 km by 15 July, linking the ruins of Rafah with the Muwasi refugee camp and extending toward Khan Yunis. Israeli officials describe the berm as a permanent security zone intended to stop infiltrations and protect nearby troops and settlements. The Israeli army acknowledged the construction when shown the images but declined to disclose its final route or total length, and U.S. Central Command and the U.S.-led “Board of Peace” gave no comment. Critics warn the structure could turn the temporary cease‑fire line into a de‑facto border, further restricting movement for displaced Palestinians. Analysts note the southern segment may soon connect with the existing 17‑km stretch from Khan Younès to Gaza City, entrenching the division of the enclave.
