On September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite using the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The launch occurred at 2:55 AM, and the satellite was placed into its intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO) approximately 18 minutes later. This mission marks the 19th flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mk II and represents the heaviest payload ever carried by the vehicle into a GTO or sub-GTO orbit. As India’s first imaging satellite to operate from a geosynchronous orbit, EOS-05 will maintain a fixed position approximately 36,000 kilometers above the Indian subcontinent. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan ~~noted that the mission is a “significant milestone for the nation’s space capabilities”~~ and Mission Director Thomas Kurian confirmed ~~that~~ the ~~satellite’s~~ satellite was precisely placed into its orbit and that its status is normal ~~and its~~ with solar panels ~~have~~ successfully deployed. EOS-05 serves as a replacement for the GISAT-1A satellite lost during a launch failure in 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the achievement as a reflection of India’s growing space sector capabilities and the strengthening partnership between ISRO and domestic industry. The satellite is intended to provide continuous, real-time monitoring for disaster management—including floods, cyclones, and forest fires—while also supporting agricultural ~~assessments of soil moisture and crop health,~~ assessments, national security, and environmental monitoring.
