Istanbul pedestrian safety concerns
Entities: Istanbul · Gökhan Fermanzade · İsmail İzlek · Ebussuud Caddesi · Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality
Overview
In late July 2026, two separate incidents in Istanbul highlighted ongoing pedestrian safety problems. On 26 July, a commercial vehicle struck a 47‑year‑old woman in the Arnavutköy district, killing her after the driver fled the scene. Police identified and arrested the driver, while local residents, already troubled by nighttime noise, drifting and racing, demanded sidewalks, speed‑calming measures and stricter enforcement.
Three days later, on 29 July, a tram on Ebussuud Caddesi in the historic Sirkeci neighbourhood hit a woman, causing a head injury. Although she declined hospital treatment, merchants and pedestrians reiterated complaints that tram drivers ignore speed‑limit warnings and that the narrow route requires slower travel. They cited a municipal “slow down” advisory that had apparently not been followed.
Both events renewed calls for stronger speed‑limit enforcement and infrastructure improvements to protect pedestrians in Istanbul’s busy streets and transit corridors.
