Italian Agriculture Ministry political developments

Italian Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida has been involved in several political developments regarding the management and defense of the agricultural sector and his ministry's administration.

Following critical remarks by journalist Stefano Feltri, who characterized farmers as ‘polluters’ and suggested the sector is largely ineffective, Minister Lollobrigida defended farmers, livestock breeders, and fishermen. He described them as ‘custodians of the environment’ and criticized the journalist’s comments as propaganda. This defense was echoed by the Asta association, which argued that European subsidies are vital for food accessibility and stabilizing prices.

In an administrative move, Minister Lollobrigida reinstated Paolo Signorelli as his communications chief. Signorelli had previously resigned in June 2024 following the leak of controversial WhatsApp messages containing antisemitic remarks and praise for extremist figures. Signorelli stated he is “estraneo a qualsiasi inchiesta” (estranged from any investigation), and the Minister noted there was “nessun impedimento” (no impediment) to his return.

More recently, Lollobrigida has sparked social media debate through a promotional video for an institutional campaign regarding Italian milk. The video, which uses a rustic setting and toy animals to explain milk origins to a child, was intended to highlight the importance of Italian livestock farmers ahead of a broader advertising campaign on the public broadcaster Rai. However, the clip has faced criticism regarding the environmental impact of dairy production, animal welfare in intensive farming, and the informal tone of the communication.
