Italian archaeological fraud sentencing

Franco Malosso, a 69-year-old entrepreneur, was sentenced to 28 months in prison for orchestrating a tourism scam in Arcugnano, near Vicenza, Italy. Malosso claimed to have discovered an ancient amphitheater following a landslide, falsely linking the site to historical figures such as Julius Caesar and Cleopatra.

Investigations by prosecutors and archaeologists revealed the 5,000-square-meter site was a modern fabrication constructed in the early 21st century using materials including concrete, fiberglass, plaster, and stones from Puglia. The site featured artificial columns, seating, and steps that were artificially aged to appear ancient, alongside a man-made lake. Despite being a hoax, the site was promoted in local tourist guides and EU-funded applications, charging visitors up to €40 for tours and as much as €600 for private tours.

Archaeologists characterized the deception as ‘diabolical,’ noting that the site’s purported Greek origins were geographically impossible for that northern region of Italy. Despite the fraud, the site maintained a five-star rating on TripAdvisor, with reviewers describing it as a ‘magical place’ and ‘unique on the planet.’

Following a 10-year legal battle, Malosso was convicted of forgery of cultural goods, illegal construction, and environmental violations, including the destruction of a protected landscape. The court has ordered the demolition of the unauthorized structures and the restoration of the hillside. Local authorities face significant costs for the demolition, estimated to reach up to €300,000, while the municipality of Arcugnano is seeking damages.
