Italian arrests for digital grooming and extortion

Overview

Authorities in Italy have arrested individuals involved in the digital grooming and blackmail of minors.

In one case, a 21-year-old man was arrested in Montopoli in Val d’Arno to serve a definitive sentence of 5 years and 4 months for crimes committed between August and December 2023. The suspect allegedly targeted underage girls in the provinces of Foggia and Ravenna via social networks, using threats to distribute modified profile photographs to coerce victims into providing sexual content.

In a separate incident in Lucca, police arrested a 21-year-old man from Viareggio for allegedly attempting to groom and blackmail a 14-year-old girl. The suspect reportedly used Instagram to initiate contact and employed artificial intelligence to create non-consensual nude images from the teenager’s photos to coerce an in-person meeting. Following a sting operation, the suspect was taken to San Giorgio prison and faces charges including attempted sexual violence, grooming a minor, and attempted extortion.
