Italian community protests against urban development

Local communities in Italy are mobilizing against urban development projects that threaten green spaces. In Monza, a coordination of committees and associations is protesting a plan to build a student dormitory on the site of the former IV Novembre barracks. The project would require clearing approximately 25,000 square meters of urban forest, which contains various tree species including poplars and elms. Organizers have requested that Mayor Paolo Pilotto withdraw the project, citing the EU Nature Restoration Law.

In Livorno, a national march is scheduled for September 5 to support the via Goito urban gardens. The six-hectare area has been managed by the Orti Urbani Collective for 14 years but was recently purchased at auction by the firm Frangerini. The developer intends to build four residential buildings and infrastructure, while designating the remaining land for public greenery. Local associations and anarchist federations are protesting the sale and the court-ordered eviction, characterizing the development as “urban speculation.”
