Italian cultural and culinary tourism initiatives

Overview

Italy continues to implement cultural and culinary initiatives to promote tourism and heritage. In Pisa, the 21st Festival del Viaggio is scheduled for late September at Palazzo Blu, focusing on food as a tool for cultural discovery following the UNESCO recognition of Italian cuisine. Recent reports highlight the success of summer programming. In San Vincenzo, the Festival della Magia and Notti delle Meraviglie, coordinated by artistic director Francesco Fontanelli, attracted approximately 16,000 spectators. An economic study by Lorenzo Ribecai estimated a total economic return of 640,000 euros for local commercial and tourism sectors. In Pisa, the Piazza dei Miracoli implemented a summer pilot program extending visiting hours until 22:30 to manage visitor flows and provide relief from high temperatures. Between June 17 and August 31, the complex recorded 47,698 evening entries, averaging 628 visitors per night. Opera della Primaziale President Andrea Maestrelli noted the initiative aimed to improve sustainability by distributing tourist flows away from peak heat hours. The program, which allowed access to the Cathedral, Leaning Tower, Baptistery, Camposanto Monumentale, and various museums after sunset, proved to be economically self-sustaining. Further cultural activity in Pisa includes the sixteenth edition of the NavigArte international festival, running from September 25 to November 1. Directed by Flavia Bucciero, the festival features dance, music, and visual arts from artists in Italy, Corsica, and Cyprus. As autumn progresses, several festivals are scheduled for October 2026. In Pisa, the 24th Pisa Book Festival will run from October 2 to 4, featuring Ukraine as the guest country with over 200 appointments. The 16th Internet Festival will follow from October 8 to 11, focusing on digital ethics, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. In Lucca, the fifth Pianeta Terra Festival will also take place from October 8 to 11, featuring sessions on biology, neuroscience, and AI.
