Italian financial and environmental crime investigations

Overview

Italian authorities have conducted several large-scale investigations involving financial fraud, embezzlement, and environmental violations.

In August, the Guardia di Finanza dismantled a scheme in Bologna involving the fictitious sale of ‘ACE’ tax credits, resulting in the seizure of approximately 3.18 million euros and the indictment of 12 individuals. Concurrently, authorities seized 4 million euros related to allegations that Imperia srl obtained a state-guaranteed loan of over 4.7 million euros for electric scooters that were never imported.

By September, investigations expanded to include environmental and public fund crimes. In Gragnano, a food preservation plant was seized due to unauthorized operations and improper hazardous waste management. Additionally, a separate investigation involving international cooperation with Eurojust led to the seizure of 7 million euros. This case involved a former sports association representative who allegedly diverted 4.5 million euros in public contributions, using assets in Germany—including properties, businesses, and luxury vehicles—to launder approximately 2.5 million euros.
