The Italian industrial and technical sectors are navigating varying economic trends driven by tax incentives and public funding. In 2025, the turnover for engineering and architecture professionals reached 14.6 billion euros, a 6.6% decrease from the previous year due to a contraction in residential construction. However, when including the broader SIA sector—comprising surveyors, geologists, and industrial experts—the total turnover reached an estimated 20.5 billion euros, reflecting an 85% growth since 2019 fueled by building renovation incentives and PNRR funding. Looking toward 2026, the sector shows signs of recovery. The SIA sector is forecasted to exceed 15 billion euros in turnover, supported by public works linked to PNRR installments. Simultaneously, Italian businesses are utilizing hyper-depreciation tax incentives to invest in machinery, technology, and renewable energy, with approximately 3,100 applications submitted since June. Construction investments are projected to exceed 250 billion euros in 2026, with infrastructure projects expected to account for 57% of total sector investments. Recent reports from the 70th National Congress of Engineers in Trieste indicate that the sector faces a critical labor shortage. The CNI Study Center reported that out of 14,200 engineers requested by the production system, over 7,000 remain difficult to find, representing a 52.5% shortage caused by a lack of available candidates. CNI President Angelo Domenico Perrini has highlighted the necessity for professional reforms to address low remuneration and the integration of Artificial Intelligence, while also discussing university training and the transition toward qualifying degrees to accelerate the entry of young professionals into the workforce.
