Italian infrastructure and road disruptions
Overview
Infrastructure issues, including geological incidents and scheduled maintenance, continue to cause road closures and traffic disruptions across several Italian regions.
In the Sorrento Peninsula, the Pozzano-Seiano tunnel on the SS145 remains closed until at least October 15 following a landslide that flooded over half of the 5.1 km tunnel and damaged its fire suppression system. The closure has forced traffic onto the old SS145 route, creating chaos for commuters and tourists. Federalberghi Penisola Sorrentina has warned that the situation is “paralyzing local mobility,” affecting residents, workers, and the tourism economy.
In Avellino, the Operational Committee for Road Viability (COV) continues to address critical issues on the SS7bis. Maintenance on the SP24 overpass requires alternating one-way traffic, impacting more than 350 daily public transport trips for students and commuters. Authorities are monitoring traffic flows to ensure priority for emergency vehicles.
New disruptions have emerged on the A14 motorway in the Abruzzo region. Construction work between Pescara Nord and Atri-Pineto is leading to nighttime closures and diversions, which are impacting logistics companies and increasing travel times.
In Maratea, the SP3 Maratea–Trecchina road was scheduled for a two-way closure on September 29 following a large rockfall, pending inspections. The SS18 remains accessible 24 hours a day.
Regarding the D14 branch toward Ravenna, nighttime paving work continues between the Bagnacavallo junction and Fornace Zarattini from 21:00 to 05:00 between September 29 and October 1. The Sant'Eufemia Ovest service area is also inaccessible during these times, with an additional closure planned for October 2 from 22:00 to 06:00.
