Italian journalist fraud investigation

Overview

In late May 2026 an incendiary device exploded outside journalist Adriano Cappellari’s home in Enego, Vicenza. Surveillance footage showed a masked individual matching his height, and investigators traced the purchase of gas canisters and alcohol to Cappellari through his own credit‑card details. On 29 July 2026 prosecutors charged him with arson, fraud, false alarm and related offences, alleging he fabricated both the threatening letters sent to himself, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and anti‑mafia priest Don Maurizio Patriciello, and the bomb‑like attack.

On 5 August 2026 Cappellari appeared before the Vicenza prosecutor’s office, handed a written apology to public prosecutor Alessia Grenna, and expressed remorse, citing personal distress during the election campaign. He pledged full cooperation and offered to support community initiatives led by Don Patriciello. Local officials, including mayor Marco Frison, cancelled a planned public event to preserve community calm.
