Italian memorial initiatives for victims

In July 2026 the Italian Senate passed a law creating a national day of remembrance on 11 October for the victims of the 1940 sinking of the Arandora Star, a British liner torpedoed by a German submarine that killed hundreds of Italians. The legislation calls for school programs, cultural events and commemorations, aiming to keep the tragedy in public memory and strengthen historic ties with the United Kingdom and Ireland.

A few weeks later, Italian municipalities in Andria and Loano announced local memorial scholarships. In Andria, a scholarship named “Beyond Borders: A Door to the World” honors a 12‑year‑old victim, Alessandro Girasole, and rewards students who show curiosity about other cultures and social inclusion. In Loano, a prize and scholarship program commemorates Janira D'Amato, focusing on preventing violence against women and promoting healthy relationships. Both initiatives extend the commemorative effort from a national, historical focus to community‑level programs that link remembrance with education and social values.
