Italian municipal heritage and urban development projects
Overview
Local governments in Italy are advancing various initiatives focused on historical preservation and urban regeneration. In Sabbioneta, authorities approved a feasibility project for the restoration and consolidation of Palazzo Forti. This project, supported by Fondazione Cariplo, aims to transform the palace into a hub for universities and businesses, specifically targeting the local Wood District.
In the Bari region, the Metropolitan City of Bari approved 300,000 euros for the restoration of the Istituto Vittorio Emanuele II facade in Giovinazzo. Additionally, the University of Bari Aldo Moro and the Municipality of Bari are collaborating on the ‘Bari in scena’ project, which includes public engagement sessions for the Costa Sud Park urban development plan.
Expanding on these urban themes, Bari recently hosted the second edition of the ‘InCittà – Spazi che cambiano, economie urbane che crescono’ summit. Organized by Confcommercio, the event brought together academics, businesses, and institutions to discuss the future of Italian urban spaces and proximity economies.
During the summit, Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, addressed the issue of urban desertification, noting that an estimated 458,000 commercial premises, representing 17% of the total, may be vacant by the end of the year, with a significant impact on small municipalities and Southern Italy. Confcommercio President Carlo Sangalli emphasized protecting cities as a common good, announcing a symbolic handover of shop keys to mayors on November 16 to foster collaboration with ANCI. European Commission Executive Vice President Raffaele Fitto also participated, addressing investments related to housing and cohesion policy.
