Italian municipal tourism management strategies

Italian municipalities are implementing various measures to manage coastal tourism and enhance local economic stability.

In the municipality of Maiori, new programs have been introduced to reserve 30% of spots at selected private lidos for residents free of charge. Mayor Gianpiero Romano described the measure as a way to “protect citizens' right to the sea while supporting sustainable tourism.” Additionally, Agropoli has expanded public amenities, including the installation of showers on free-access sections of the coastline and the opening of a “solidary beach” designed to improve access for people with disabilities.

Efforts have since expanded toward addressing tourism seasonality. In Crotone, local council groups are advocating for a broader event schedule to extend the economic benefits of the summer season beyond the mid-August peak. Similarly, Agropoli has launched a winter campaign, ‘Vivi il Natale, Vivi Agropoli’, utilizing artistic lights and markets to attract visitors during the holiday season, aiming to link summer beach tourism with year-round cultural appeal.
