In late July 2026, Italy’s cultural calendar featured regional highlights and a national initiative to extend monument hours. In the Marche region, Roccafluvione promoted its medieval sites and spring beer festival, while the Molini Girola contrada in Fermo prepared for celebrations surrounding the Assumption of Mary in August. From 1 August, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism, and the municipality of Milan launched an experimental programme to extend evening access to flagship monuments through 31 August. This included the Colosseum (Fridays and Saturdays, 19:45–23:30), the Pantheon (daily, 19:00–23:00, closed Thursdays), and Castello Sforzesco (daily, 17:30–19:30). The initiative aimed to disperse crowds, avoid peak heat, and accommodate residents’ and tourists’ schedules. Culture minister Alessandro Giuli noted the extensions offer a “unique opportunity to experience two universal testimonies of history and human ingenuity,” while tourism minister Gianmarco Mazzi highlighted that cultural tourism contributes approximately €58 billion to the national economy. While ticket prices for the Colosseum and Pantheon remained unchanged, Castello Sforzesco offered half-price tickets for the month. By mid-August, in response to ongoing heatwaves, authorities expanded nighttime visiting hours at the Colosseum, doubling the number of night tours to four nights per week. ~~Visitors described~~ Supported by Ministry of Culture funding, these guided tours can accommodate up to 275 visitors per session and run until 23:00, allowing exploration of the ~~illuminated atmosphere as “magical”~~ arena and ~~“romantic,”~~ underground passages in cooler temperatures. The program is highly popular, with summer bookings already fully reserved. Other Roman landmarks have implemented similar adaptations, such as the Roman Forum introducing special evening lighting and ~~officials~~ the Baths of Caracalla resuming its ‘Notturno Imperiale’ evening openings. Officials indicated the extended schedule may continue through September to meet high demand and manage extreme weather.
