Italian regional hunting policy

In late July 2026 the Regional Council of Tuscany approved its first five‑year wildlife‑hunting plan, a 1,700‑page document intended to balance the interests of farmers, hunters and environmentalists. The plan, passed by a narrow 22‑to‑17 vote, replaces a provisional regime dating back to 2015 and is presented as a model for other Italian regions.

A week later, in early August 2026, the province of Trentino set quotas for the 2026 hunting season, allowing the culling of about 13,000 deer and chamois. While the total permitted kills were reduced by 3 % for the year, the plan returns to a five‑year management cycle and aims to increase quotas gradually through 2030. The WWF criticised the Trentino quotas, citing climate concerns and wildlife impacts, but the plan was signed by the provincial wildlife service after consultation with local hunting groups.

Both snapshots illustrate a broader trend of Italian regions formalising hunting management frameworks, each facing opposition from environmental organisations while seeking to regulate wildlife populations and hunting activities.
