Italian school dropout rate trends and educational disparities
Italy has reached a national school dropout rate of 8.2%, meeting the European Union’s 9% target five years ahead of the 2030 deadline. Despite this milestone, significant regional and socioeconomic disparities remain. In Bari, dropout rates reach as high as 26.6% However, recent data indicates further shifts in specific districts, and these metrics. Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara reported that approximately 520,000 young people have returned to the rate among foreign populations averages 60%. Furthermore, “implicit dispersion”—where students graduate without meeting minimum competency requirements—is rising, particularly school system since 2022, contributing to a drop in Southern Italy and the islands. Data from Save the Children highlights that dropout rate from 11.5% to 7.3%. Despite these improvements, significant disparities persist. Dropout rates in vocational institutes (5.3%) are remain approximately four times higher than in high schools (1.3%). (1.3%), while technical institutes report a rate of 3.7%. Regional gaps persist, continue to be a factor, with the Islands reporting a 13.7% dropout rate compared to 6.8% in the North East. Socioeconomic and citizenship factors also play a critical role; students with parents holding only middle school diplomas face lower completion probabilities, and drive inequality; youth with foreign citizenship experience face a dropout rate of 26.2%, roughly 20 percentage points higher than Italian citizens. Regarding student competency, INVALSI data shows a decrease in “implicit dispersion”—students graduating without meeting minimum competency levels in math, Italian, and English—which fell from 8.7% to 6.3%. Additionally, the OECD-PISA 2025 results show Italy’s performance in mathematics (468) and reading (474) remained stable and exceeded OECD averages, even as international averages declined. Nevertheless, structural challenges remain, specifically the performance gaps between high schools and vocational institutes and territorial disparities between the North-West and the South.
