Italian sea turtle conservation efforts

In late July 2026, Italian conservation groups continued a series of public marine‑turtle releases and outreach activities along the Adriatic coast. On 24 July, the Fondazione Cetacea centre in Riccione released the rehabilitated turtle Ulisse at Baia Flaminia beach, drawing local crowds and supporting a charity breakfast tied to a fundraising campaign for further turtle care. The center also announced a forthcoming release of another rescued Caretta caretta, Nancy, later in the month.

Two days later, on 26 July, the University of Bari opened a new Sea Turtle Clinic in Valenzano, funded by the Puglia region, to provide advanced rehabilitation and research facilities. As part of the inauguration, two rescued Caretta caretta turtles from the WWF centre in Molfetta were released off Bari’s San Cataldo pier. Simultaneously, the Livorno Aquarium launched a limited‑attendance feeding experience that lets visitors observe green turtles Ari and Cuba, aiming to boost citizen‑science engagement and public awareness of turtle conservation.

Together, these events illustrate a widening network of turtle‑focused initiatives in Italy, combining direct animal releases with new treatment facilities and interactive public programs to strengthen marine‑conservation efforts.
