Political representatives from the Lega party have advocated for the expansion of the ‘Strade Sicure’ security operation, proposing an increase in national military presence for public security to 10,000 units. Local officials in Macerata and Cesena supported the initiative, describing it as a ‘precious resource’ to protect citizens and commercial activities. In response, the Undersecretary of State for Defense, Defense Isabella Rauti, Rauti has defended the operation as a vital security model. She model rather than an outdated one. Speaking at the Festival dell’Espresso, she noted that the program is entering its 18th year and is being strengthened by the Meloni government through ‘Stazioni Sicure,’ which increases military presence at major railway hubs. While Rauti emphasized that the initiative has improved both the perception of safety and actual security through continuous, 24/7 monitoring. While she did not rule out increasing personnel beyond the current deployment of approximately 6,800 members, personnel, she cautioned that any expansion must account for resource availability and the time required for specialized training and equipment. In L'Aquila, opposition city councilors Enrico Verini and Gianni Padovani have formally requested Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to activate the operation in their city. Although the City Council unanimously approved the measure in 2024, it has not yet been implemented. The councilors cited a growing sense of insecurity and criticized the Prefecture’s perceived inertia and the lack of a municipal police commander, stating they may escalate the matter to the President of the Republic if the request is not addressed.
