Italian textile industry innovation initiatives

Overview

Italian textile districts are implementing technological and sustainable initiatives to address international competition and new European regulations.

In Tuscany, the Tuscany Fashion Cluster has initiated a three-year program managed by Next Technology Tecnotessile and promoted by the Tuscany Region. This program aims to strengthen the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through digitalization, technological transfer, and sustainable transitions, involving a network of companies and academic institutions.

In the Carpi district, projects totaling 600,000 euros in regional and European funding have been introduced. One such project, ‘WATER RETTING 4.0’, focuses on using an industrial bioreactor to extract hemp fiber from processing waste for use in textiles or blends with wool and cotton. The project also explores using hemp stem components to produce hemp-lime bricks for construction.
