Italian urban regeneration and infrastructure projects

Overview

Italy continues to see diverse regional initiatives focused on urban regeneration, infrastructure, and community-driven development. Previous efforts included the transformation of the Cittadella dello Sport in Ferrara, energy upgrades in Porto San Giorgio, and stadium planning in Rome. In Verona, the group Verona Domani has criticized the current administration’s Territorial Planning (PAT) as being “overly ideological,” contesting projects like the “medianina” road connection through Adige Sud Park. In Milan, the 2026 Urban Regeneration Forum is set to address metropolitan transformations and climate change adaptation.

Recent developments show continued momentum in local projects. In Rome, the redevelopment of the historic Torri dell'Eur complex has been completed following a 250 million euro investment by Gruppo CDP, focusing on energy efficiency. Other municipal works include the renovation of the via Carlo Poerio market in Rione Libertà, underground parking construction in Trento, and PNRR-funded social gardens and dormitories in Alessandria. Additional local efforts include the revitalization of Via don Lorenzo Guetti in Trento with increased greenery and pedestrian space, flood prevention in Forlì, and urban beautification in Civita Castellana.

Newer initiatives highlight social inclusion and housing. In Ariccia, the renovated Villa Ricordi has opened as a hub for social and professional inclusion. In Ronchi dei Legionari, a 5.36 million euro plan has commenced to demolish degraded public housing and construct 12 new units. In Campi Bisenzio, local authorities are implementing social housing (Ers) initiatives to support the ‘grey zone’—working individuals who earn sufficient income but cannot afford market-rate real estate. This includes repurposing an old hydraulic station for emergency housing and a ‘Housing First’ project, alongside converting unfinished buildings into 17 social housing units.
