Italian vocational education and training developments

Overview

In mid-October 2026, discussions regarding the future of vocational education and training (IeFP) highlighted both strategic planning at the European level and implementation failures at the regional level in Italy.

A seminar held in Rome focused on the development of the IeFP system during the transition between European programming cycles. Foundation President Sister Manuela Robazza noted the event arrived at a “critical juncture” regarding the governance and resources of the European Social Fund, aiming to use vocational training as a tool for innovation and social inclusion.

Concurrently, in Sicily, regional officials raised concerns over the suspension of fourth-year vocational training programs. Ignazio Abbate, President of the I Commission for Institutional Affairs at the Sicilian Regional Assembly, reported that the Department of Education failed to launch these programs for the 2024/25 school year and has delayed the start of the 2026-27 academic year. This suspension prevents students from obtaining the professional accreditation required to open their own businesses.
