Italy 2026 permanent population census
Overview
Italy’s national statistics institute, Istat, has commenced its 2026 permanent census of population and housing. The survey, which runs from October 5 to December 23, 2026, utilizes a representative sampling method targeting approximately 1.4 million families across 2,529 municipalities.
The census aims to gather essential socio-economic and demographic data, including employment status, education levels, housing characteristics, and mobility patterns to assist in public service and infrastructure planning. This annual survey follows a model transitioned from a decennial format in 2018, intended to update municipal registries and provide a detailed view of the country’s evolving landscape.
Selected households can complete the questionnaire online using personal credentials, SPID, or CIE until December 6. For those unable to complete the process online, municipal operators will conduct follow-up interviews via telephone or in person between November 12 and December 23. Participation is mandatory, and failure to comply may result in sanctions.
In Milan, the sample survey specifically targets 10,000 families. Meanwhile, provisional Istat data for January 1, 2026, regarding the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni region indicates that foreign residents account for 3.0% of the population, a figure notably lower than the 9.1% national average and the 10.4% recorded in Veneto. In the Altopiano, the foreign resident population has seen a slight increase to 631, with the highest concentrations in Asiago, Lusiana Conco, and Roana.
