Italy automotive Ecobonus incentive program
Overview
The Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made-in-Italy launched the Ecobonus platform to provide incentives for low-emission commercial vehicles and fuel retrofits. The program includes a €40 million allocation for purchasing low-emission light-duty commercial vehicles and a €4 million allocation for retrofitting gasoline-powered cars with LPG or methanol systems.
Under the Automotive Decree, the government has implemented specific retrofit bonuses to encourage the conversion of existing vehicles to more sustainable fuels. As of July 29, the Invitalia platform is active, allowing installers to pre-book incentives that are applied directly as a discount on the invoice.
The available subsidies include €400 for the purchase and installation of a new, certified LPG (GPL) system, while the contribution increases to €800 for those choosing methane. To qualify, vehicles must be M1 category passenger cars with an environmental class of Euro 3 or higher. Eligible vehicles must not already be powered by LPG, methane, or dual-fuel systems, and must not have previously utilized the Ecobonus. These incentives are available to both individuals and legal entities, though businesses that trade in M1 category vehicles are excluded.
