Italy defibrillator rollout

On 28 July 2026 an Italian hospital in Acireale performed the first implantation of a subcutaneous implantable cardioverter‑defibrillator (S‑ICD), highlighting a move toward safer cardiac‑care devices. In the same week the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional authorities, together with the national football federation and the amateur league, announced an €800,000 programme to map, purchase and install external semi‑automatic defibrillators at sports venues, a response to recent sudden‑cardiac‑death cases.

The next day, the city of Vicenza introduced the “Vicenza Parchi Vivi” initiative, expanding year‑round free activities in public parks and, as part of the “Vicenza Città Cardioprotetta” scheme, signing a protocol to broaden and maintain a city‑wide network of external defibrillators. An online map now shows device locations across public and private sites, reinforcing the broader Italian push to improve emergency cardiac response in both health facilities and community spaces.
