Italy continues to navigate a complex landscape of waste management and environmental conservation. While the country has seen success in the circular economy, localized ecological and sanitation challenges persist. Recent ISPRA data confirms that construction and demolition activities generated 90.4 million tons of waste in 2024, accounting for 52.5% of Italy’s 172 million tons of special waste. In Sardinia, the plastic waste crisis has seen significant developments. After facing a storage emergency, Environment Councilor Raniero Selva announced that the critical phase in Alghero had passed. By September 2026, the crisis began to ease as seasonal production peaks subsided and transfers to mainland Italy resumed. During a regional coordination meeting involving local mayors, provincial presidents, and environmental authorities, Corepla reported that approximately 2,500 tons of plastic packaging waste were transferred from Sardinia to mainland plants in September, with further September. Further shipments of 2,600 tons and subsequent are scheduled shortly, with monthly estimates of 3,000 tons planned to address backlogs in Macchiareddu, Sassari, and Olbia. However, structural risks remain. Corepla warned that medium-term difficulties persist due to a collapse in the recycling market, where the economic value of recycled plastic fell significantly compared to low-priced virgin plastic imported from countries like China. This market shift caused companies to stop purchasing recycled materials, leading to the saturation of storage and selection centers. National concerns regarding the recycling supply chain are intensifying. Gianni Mannucchi, President of the Environmental Services Section of Unindustria, has warned that a lack of outlets for recycled materials threatens to paralyze urban collection services. Similar infrastructure and collection difficulties have been reported in the Lazio and Puglia regions. In Alghero, local officials have raised alarms over the potential closure of the Monte Doglia waste facility, which could impact the local construction sector.
