Tensions have escalated between Italian authorities and German non-governmental organizations (NGOs) regarding Mediterranean migrant rescue operations. These organizations argued that rescue is a legal obligation and criticized the Italian government for attempting to criminalize humanitarian efforts. Following a rescue operation on August 13 in international waters involving six people, Italian authorities imposed a 7,500 euro fine and a 45-day administrative detention on the Sea Watch 5 after it docked in Naples. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced the sanctions, citing a “grave violation of regulations” and a failure to coordinate the rescue with the Libyan maritime rescue coordination center. Italian authorities maintain that rescue activities must be managed by sovereign states rather than private organizations.
