Italy infrastructure and transport sector challenges
Overview
Italian infrastructure and transport sectors continue to face intensifying economic pressures. Construction companies struggle with rising costs for energy and raw materials like steel, concrete, and bitumen, contributing to an estimated structural deficit of 3.8 billion euros between 2024 and 2025.
These financial strains are particularly acute in the transport and logistics sectors. Confartigianato Trasporti reported that a 54.3% rise in industrial diesel prices between February and September has resulted in additional costs of approximately 11,227 euros per truck. In response, industry leaders are calling for structural solutions, such as stable compensation tools, funds for vehicle fleet renewal, and a review of European driving and rest regulations.
Government officials have engaged with these concerns. Deputy Minister Edoardo Rixi announced efforts to secure an additional 80-90 million euros to meet industry demands.
Operational and political hurdles also persist. In Rome, roadwork on Via Maioli has been delayed by unmapped utility conduits, while in the Molise region, political opposition has criticized the lack of progress on the electrification of the Roccaravindola–Isernia–Campobasso railway line.
The upcoming 11th Conftrasporto-Confcommercio Forum, scheduled for October 21 in Rome, is expected to address infrastructure deficiencies, driver shortages, and geopolitical tensions affecting trade routes. The forum will also explore how digitalization could potentially save logistics companies an estimated 18 billion euros.
