On 24 July 2026 a 60‑year‑old tourist was swept from a floating mattress at Capomulini beach near Catania and carried three kilometres by a strong current to the Timpa of Acireale. Alerted by friends, the Port Authority, Catania police and the Coast Guard deployed vessels and jet‑ski units; a police officer entered the water, retrieved her, and she was treated on‑shore for minor abrasions before release.

A later report confirmed the same sequence of events, emphasizing the swift coordination among the port authority, police, and Coast Guard that enabled the one‑hour search and safe return of the tourist. It added that Polizia di Stato agents on jet‑skis located the woman among the rocks, lifted her onto a jet‑ski and handed her to ambulance personnel, who treated her minor injuries.

The next day, a 12‑year‑old girl suffered a serious head injury after falling from a catamaran off Palmarola island. The Guardia di Finanza patrol boat V. 905 arrived within minutes, provided first aid and stabilised the child, and coordinated an air‑lift from a Civitavecchia aeronaval helicopter to a hospital on the Tyrrhenian coast.

Both incidents illustrate Italy’s integrated maritime rescue framework, with rapid multi‑agency response—police, navy, finance patrols and medical evacuation—ensuring prompt assistance in coastal emergencies.
