Italy’s senior women’s basketball team has been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin following an 82-80 loss to Australia in a decisive playoff match. Prior to the elimination, Italy faced a setback against China, losing 71-51. In that match, China’s Han Xu recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds, while 19-year-old center Zhang Ziyu contributed eight points. This victory allowed China to secure second place in their group, setting up a playoff against Puerto Rico. In the final elimination game against Australia, Italy mounted a massive fourth-quarter comeback after trailing by as many as 26 ~~points.~~ points in the third quarter. Costanza Verona led the Italian scoring with a career-high 23 points, supported by Vittoria Blasigh’s 13 points. However, a last-second attempt by Francesca Pasa failed to score, ending Italy's run. Australia, led by Isobel Borlase’s 30 points, secured a spot in the quarterfinals to face Spain. Despite injuries to key players Alanna Smith and Ezi Magbegor, the Australian team managed to hold off the Italian surge to advance. Coach Andrea Capobianco noted that while the team struggled with technical execution and intensity in the first half, they showed immense resilience when their talent and spirit aligned during the comeback. Reflecting on the tournament, player Martina Fassina noted the team’s reliance on collective hard work rather than a high concentration of WNBA talent, emphasizing the need to regain their identity and grit. Despite the exit, Italy’s performance secured a place among the world's top 12 teams for the first time in 32 years. The squad will now shift focus to the Women's EuroBasket 2027 qualifiers beginning in November.
