Italy public debt reaches record high
Overview
Italy’s public debt reached a record high of 3,207.2 billion euros in June, marking a monthly increase of 26.2 billion euros and a yearly increase of approximately 335.9 billion euros. According to the Bank of Italy, this rise was driven by the financing needs of public administrations (13.3 billion euros), increased Treasury liquid assets (9.8 billion euros), and effects from inflation-indexed bond revaluations, exchange rate variations, and issuance/redemption premiums (3.1 billion euros).
As the debt surpasses the 3,200 billion euro threshold, the composition of debt holders is shifting. The share held by the Bank of Italy has decreased to 16.7 percent, while the proportion held by non-resident investors has risen to 35.7 percent. Conversely, debt held by Italian families and non-financial enterprises has declined. The average remaining life of the debt remains stable at 7.9 years.
Sustainability concerns persist as the debt-to-GDP ratio stands at 138.9%, significantly exceeding the Eurozone average of 88.9%. The European Commission forecasts this ratio will reach 139.2% by 2027, citing low productivity and economic growth expected to remain below 1%.
Adding to these concerns, the cultural movement Euromò has identified Italy as having one of the highest debt ratios in the EU. The organization attributes Italy’s debt expansion to high interest costs and demographic imbalances, specifically an aging population affecting the welfare state. Euromò warns that such high debt levels can lead to reduced public services and higher taxes for workers.
