Italy space economy and technological cooperation
Overview
Italy has established itself as a major player in the European space economy, characterized by significant increases in civil space activity budgets and high levels of public R&D investment. According to an OECD report, Italy’s space budget reached approximately 2.22 billion dollars in 2025, and its public R&D spending in the sector represents a 14.1% share of total public R&D, a figure tied with France.
Building on this industrial strength, Italy and France have entered into new technological cooperation agreements. During the International Space Summit in Paris, companies from both nations signed deals to advance artificial intelligence in space operations and to integrate high-capacity optical satellite links into ground segment services. Italian Minister Adolfo Urso stated that such cooperation is intended to foster a “more competitive and sovereign European space industry.”
