L’Aquila continues its cultural expansion as it prepares for its 2026 designation as the Italian Capital of Culture. The city is implementing diverse initiatives ranging from educational programs like ‘Pre-Texts / Geografie di creatività urbana’ at the Istituto Bafile to large-scale artistic installations. A significant milestone includes the inauguration of Ai Weiwei’s site-specific steel sculpture, ‘Figure and wheelbarrow for L’Aquila,’ located in front of the Palazzo dell’Emiciclo. The piece serves as a symbol of labor and reconstruction, drawing parallels between the 2008 Sichuan earthquake and L’Aquila’s 2009 earthquake history. Infrastructure and exhibition updates include the reopening of Palazzo Farinosi Branconi as ‘La Galleria Bper,’ a new cultural hub, and the extension of Raphael’s ‘The Visitation’ exhibition at the Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo. The city is also expanding its musical and social programming through the ‘Il Jazz Italiano per le Terre del Sisma’ festival and the ‘Lumen: Laboratorio di fotografia’ workshop for youth in the juvenile justice system.
