L'Aquila cultural rebirth and 2026 Capital of Culture prep
Overview
Italy’s summer cultural season continues to expand, with L’Aquila’s role as the 2026 Capital of Culture driving significant social and economic activity. The city is undergoing a cultural rebirth seventeen years after the 2009 earthquake, marked by the restoration of the central square, the removal of scaffolding from the Duomo, and the arrival of masterpieces such as Raphael’s ‘Visitation’ and Antonello da Messina’s ‘Ecce Homo.’ Recent developments include the reopening of Palazzo Farinosi Branconi as ‘La Galleria Bper,’ a new cultural hub following extensive restoration. Major exhibitions have also reached key milestones, including the Ai Weiwei showcase at MAXXI L'Aquila and the extended loan of Raphael’s ‘The Visitation.’ Cultural programming is expanding through music and performance. The 12th edition of the ‘Jazz Italiano per le terre del sisma’ festival, themed ‘Riflessi’ (Reflections), will feature over 300 artists performing across more than 20 locations in the historic center. Complementing this, the association ‘Il Jazz all’Aquila ETS’ has inaugurated a new headquarters in Bazzano, housing the Pasquale Golia Jazz Music Studies Center to support cultural formation and social inclusion. Additionally, MAXXI L’Aquila will host the sixth edition of the Performative festival from September 11 to 13. Curated under the theme ‘Combinatorie,’ the festival at Palazzo Ardinghelli will offer over 50 free appointments involving contemporary music, dance, video art, theater, and poetry. Furthering the city's media profile, L’Aquila will host the 78th edition of the Prix Italia from September 28 to October 2. Promoted by Rai, this international competition focuses on radio, podcast, television, and digital productions under the slogan ‘Play Human.’ The event will feature discussions on disinformation, technology, and artificial intelligence, with a dedicated village established at the Parco Renzo Piano Auditorium.
