EU response and Italy Schengen suspension checks after Ceuta surge
In early August 2026 an estimated 50,000‑60,000 migrants crossed from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, overwhelming the city. Authorities reported between 70 and 84 deaths deaths, later confirmed at least 72, and repatriated most migrants within days, with tens of thousands returned to Morocco. Spain deployed about 3,000 police, Guardia Civil and army personnel and installed a 500‑metre floating barrier at the Tarajal coast. The scale of the crisis prompted an urgent video conference of EU interior ministers on 4 August after a joint letter from 22 member states. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged assistance, and EU interior commissioner Magnus Brunner called for coordinated border controls and action against trafficking networks. Italy, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, responded with a one‑month, sample‑based suspension of Schengen checks on passengers arriving from Spain at major airports and seaports, describing it as a limited suspension of parts of the Schengen treaty for August. The measures began on 1 August and included random document checks on travelers from Spain, a policy set to run for a month. The move has sparked diplomatic tension with Spain, whose leader Pedro Sánchez criticised the approach. EU members continue to coordinate assistance and border management while addressing the humanitarian fallout of the Ceuta surge.
