Jaguar rescue and conservation efforts in Brazil
Overview
Recent efforts to protect jaguars in Brazil have involved both successful reintroductions to the wild and transfers to specialized sanctuaries.
In São Paulo, a six-year-old male jaguar named Theodoro was rescued after being found exhausted near a highway in Teodoro Sampaio. Following a joint operation by the Fundação Florestal, Military Police, and Fire Department, the animal was successfully returned to the Morro do Diabo State Park without requiring sedation.
In a separate case, a jaguar named Moara was transferred to the Santuário Onça Pintada in Minas Gerais. Originally rescued as a cub in Mato Grosso, Moara was unable to return to the wild and is now receiving specialized care to contribute to the genetic diversity of the Cerrado biome.
