Jailbroken PlayStation 5 hardware utility expansion

Developments involving jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles have expanded from gaming utility to local artificial intelligence hosting.

Initially, a Brazilian developer created ‘PSBox Cloud Gaming’, a homebrew application that allows jailbroken consoles to access Xbox Cloud Gaming. The software supports 1080p streaming, 4K upscaling via the console’s GPU, and deep integration with DualSense controller features like adaptive triggers and rumble.

Subsequently, developers utilized the hardware to function as local AI servers through the PS5LM project. By porting llama.cpp to the console, users can run large language models natively. An enhanced version, PS5LM Plus, leverages the AMD RADV driver and Vulkan to increase available memory from approximately 6GB to 11.4GB. This allows for the execution of models such as Qwen 3.8-27B and Llama 3.2 3B, with the latter reaching speeds of up to 124 tokens per second. These models can be served across local networks via APIs compatible with OpenAI and Anthropic standards, though the process carries risks of hardware bans or account suspensions.
