Jakarta cultural and creative industry development
Overview
Jakarta is experiencing a period of cultural activity and strategic development within its creative sectors. In early October 2026, the city hosted various free art exhibitions and festivals, including the Jakarta Pantomime Festival, the Indonesian Contemporary Art & Design (ICAD 2026), and the Jakarta Biennale 2026: KEBAL.
By late October, the focus shifted toward the formalization of the film industry. During the Jakarta Film Summit 2026, Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo and Vice Governor Rano Karno proposed transforming the city into a regional film hub, using Busan, South Korea, as a model. The summit, which drew over 500 participants from 10 countries, focused on investment, production co-financing, and regulatory ease. To support this vision, the Jakarta Film Commission is facilitating filming permits, and the government is offering a “50 percent film tax discount” to attract production houses. Discussions involving the Asian Film Alliance Network (AFAN) and the Indonesian Film Agency (BPI) also centered on strengthening international co-productions and establishing dedicated funding schemes to support Indonesian producers in large-scale global projects.
Parallel to these creative initiatives, the provincial government launched the Karir Jakarta and Tenaga Kerja Mandiri Expo 2026 to address employment. The job fair offers 12,000 vacancies across approximately 100 state-owned and private companies. Governor Pramono stated the city aims to reduce the open unemployment rate from 5.79 percent to a target of 3.5 percent, noting that the city remains open to job seekers from all regions.
